Tomorrow Was Awesome

When asked about the recording process of the band’s newest record, Kinky Fingers vocalist/guitarist Tayler Doyle pauses and chuckles before answering. “It was leisurely. We took our time with it. We had some of the songs mostly finished and they just needed a bit of polish, and others we built from the ground up in the studio. No egos, just four guys in a room making a record.”

It only takes a few seconds of Tomorrow Was Awesome for the laid-back vibe to become apparent. Dig a little deeper, though, and the elements that have made the Denver-based four-piece such an enticing live act quickly start to tumble out. Pulsing Latin grooves mix with reverb-slathered surf guitar motifs, as sweet Philly Soul harmonies float above. Tie it all together with Tay’s keening howl and dunk it in a pint glass of garage rock swagger… you got yourself a new favorite band.

“We decided years ago that we didn’t want to put any limits on our sound. If we like it, we figure out how to throw it in. No use being precious. We all keep digging for new things and try to find new ingredients to add to our soup,” notes Tayler. Those ingredients are brought to light by Dustin Peterson on drums, Earl Snyder on guitar, Jairo Barsallo on bass, and Tayler on guitar and vocals. Four best friends making art, running their own race.

This musical magpie-ism has served the band as they’ve evolved. Building on previous records (2015’s Vagabond, 2016’s Worst Of, and 2018’s Garbage Plate), and almost constant touring, the group’s sound has gradually evolved into a glorious racket tailor-made for the best primary-colored, pop-culture explosion Tarantino hasn’t made yet. Come to think of it, the approach to their music kinda echoes QT’s approach to making movies. Take everything people loved about 60’s pop, and process it through the gnarly modern lens of 2020 (pun semi-intended).

Tomorrow Was Awesome is the sound of a band confident in who they are, crackling with energy and itching to bring these songs to their favorite venues. Sure to be the newest soundtrack to Saturday’s party and Sunday’s hangover.
